Wildwood Barn.
The Wildwood Valley frames pristine views of the Indian Ocean, yet is subsequently vulnerable to harsh sweeping fronts that funnel through.
Wildwood Barn provides a warm, quiet sanctuary to enjoy the valley in all its seasons.
The 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home is anchored by blades of concrete, with timber and steel used for contrasting levity. The two concrete blades run perpendicular and converge in a 3 sided protected outdoor space cut into the floor plan, to encourage integration of the verandah into the home, prioritising and lengthening it's use throughout the year. One concrete blade protrudes North out to landscape; the lone wall and stone underfoot suggests a room with as little interventions as possible. Eaves are un-lined and the gutter dropped down with chamfered edges, celebrating water collection. Rains become a welcomed theatrical experience as you watch the droplets descend.
Timber window placements are considered, framing views but not exploiting them. The living space employs a bank of timber windows with mullions dissecting the escarpment like a diptych.
This project is a testament to a collaborative team that held a strong vision for something special.
